Bogus Bomb Threat Emails Cause Internet Consternation

On his blog, Graham Cluley discusses the bogus bomb threats that were sent via emails on December 13 to “scores of colleges, businesses, hospitals and courthouses” in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and perhaps other places that “demanded a Bitcoin payment be made by the end of the working day”.

This is a gruesome, demented business. “Police authorities have confirmed that they do not believe the threats to be genuine, but you can understand the anxiety that some schools and businesses will have experienced receiving an email like this.” (A copy of the email is posted in Cluley’s report.)

Should you ever receive such an email, here is Cluley’s advice:

  • Do not respond or try to contact the sender.
  • Do not pay the ransom.
  • Report the email to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center or your local FBI field office.
