A Training Video for ‘Ordinary’ Security

Instilling habits of alertness and awareness are important to maintaining security in public facilities like stores and office buildings. Everyone employed at such facilities can be taught alertness pointers. Here’s an example of a training video that can help – The Department of Homeland Security’s “What’s in Store: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Events.” It’s on YouTube.

This video is based on alertness in a shopping mall setting. It’s theme is “There a no suspicious people, but suspicious behavior.”  It’s helpful to know we’re not trying to flag people, just unusual or behavior.

The value of such awareness efforts was emphasized by the thwarted Times Square bomber incident. It’s not hard to increase alertness, people just need to be mindful of what’s going on around them.
