Al-Qaeda in Iraq Threatening U.S. Attacks

Al-Qaeda in Iraq is becoming more pointed, or reckless, about threatening attacks in the U.S. “You will soon witness how attacks will resound in the heart of your land, because our war with you has now started,” says an audio recording released by Abu Bakr Baghdadi, the pseudonym used by the head of Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Several associates of l al-Qaeda in Iraq have been arrested in the U.S. and Canada in the last two years, but whether the organization has gained a foothold here is unclear. Yet Matthew Olsen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, acknowledges the organization represents a “potential threat” to the U.S. Security officers likely are taking the possibility seriously, as they should.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq has been rebuilding there and is believed responsible for 100 deaths in attacks there after “Baghdadi’s” message was released last weekend.
