Security Cameras aren’t for Issuing Traffic Tickets

Oh dear, use security cameras only for monitoring entrances and perimeters, not for sending out traffic tickets. That’s the lesson of a court case that originated in Elmwood Place, Ohio, where the police were using “speed monitoring cameras” that automatically recorded speeders and sent them $105 traffic tickets in the mail.

A judge recently “ruled the cameras violate motorists’ constitutional rights to due process and referred to the camera program as a ‘scam’.” There’s more to this story, which we invite you to read at your leisure. But the basic point is, security cameras are for security, not necessarily for traffic control, at least when it’s enforced by tickets in the mail.
