‘White Hat’ Hackers Win Pentagon Bounties

The Defense Department picked 250 “white hat” hackers, the good guys, to challenge the Pentagon’s computer defenses and compete for cash awards. DefenseTech reports that 138 vulnerabilities eligible for bounties were found.

The awards total $150,000 while “a full-blown cyber audit would have cost at least $1 million,” Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said this month. In addition, he added, “we’ve fixed all those vulnerabilities.” A happy outcome from the “Hack The Pentagon” challenge, which will be repeated, probably by the Pentagon and its contractors alike.
