Digital Hijacker Stirs Things Up in Tampa, Florida

Here’s an instance from the sick side of sanity to indicate why it’s important to keep social media accounts as secure as possible: NakedSecurity reports that the mayor of Tampa, Florida, had his Twitter account hijacked recently by an intruder who posted bomb threats and child sex abuse material on it.

“Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s account is normally filled with pro-Tampa messages,” Danny Bradbury advises on Naked Security. “He encourages developers to submit innovative ideas for urban expansion and promotes owner-occupied home repair programs” there. Then things went off the rails. “The mayor’s account was hacked to post messages, most of which were too vile to reproduce here.”

Here’s how one of the tweets actually read: “EMERGENCY ALERT – BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAD (stet) INBOUND TO TAMPA BAY AREA. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

Fortunately, it’s not often that we can post such a ghastly example of digital intrusion. But keep your keyboard security guard up!
