The borderline between real and fake on the Internet keeps getting extended. Graham Cluley on Bitdefender reports how Walmart’s name was used in a bogus press release that it would accept the cryptocurrency Litecoin “as a form of payment at its retail stores across America”. The trouble was, it hadn’t done any such thing.
“Instead, a bogus press release – claiming to be an official communication from the retail goliath – had been posted in Walmart’s name on GlobeNewswire, one of the world’s largest press release distribution networks.”
This is an example of how corporations. not just individuals (like bloggers), need to be mindful of how they can be used in cyber fakery. It can happen to the mightiest as well as the most obscure of us all.
