The ultimate security threat could come from the sky above the earth’s atmosphere – an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that could disable – “fry” is a term sometimes used – power-generating and distribution systems. We don’t necessarily buy into this threat, but when an evenhanded presentation of the possibility comes along, as in this National Journal article, it’s worth passing along.
There’s a small “but growing” bipartisan congressional Electromagnetic Pulse Caucus, and the related Fourth Annual World Summit on Infrastructure Security will be held May 20-21 in Washington. And former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is worried about EMP. So, if you need one, we recommend the National Journal’s piece as an introduction to this potentially cataclysmic subject.
